About the Artist

"The spirit of man is not finely moved to create a work of art unless it is deeply touched" Harold Speed
My journey began in London, during the bicentennial of our independence when I happened upon a seminal collection of J.M.W. Turner's paintings in the hallowed Tate Britain Museum. The ensuing decades have been punctuated by bursts of inspired dabbling in an effort at a glimpse of the genius impelling him to master "manipulating paint into ethereal approximations of nature." This led to a decade-long serious foray into the free expression of painting en plein air; pochade box and brushes employed in the elusive pursuit of "capturing the light," or the "air between artist and subject," as I recall loosely attributed to Monet. The American West, Pacific and Maine Coasts, Lake Superior, Madeline Island and Paris have provided natural vistas and color palettes moving me beyond the familiar Eastern flora, fauna and refracted light.
Imperceptible forward movement provides the impetus to "keep at it," as new pieces yield small, discernable rewards. Joy and satisfied contentment continue. Many have inspired and brought timely focus to my meanderings. I am indebted and grateful beyond measure. Their hand and eye are revealed in each piece, in ways known only to me. Imitation surely the highest form of flattery.
Highlights for 2023: "Honorable mention" award and recognition at the Port Wing Plein Air event in Wisconsin; painting plein air in the Luxembourg Gardens in Paris; visiting Monet's garden and studio in Giverny and the Sennelier art store along the banks of the Seine; painting in Rocky Mountain National Park and attending the 10th anniversary Plein Air Convention in Denver; painting in Laguna Beach, California; delivering 4 large pieces for a Princeton, NJ law firm opening (by commission); return engagement showing 15 new works in oil at the Gallery at Ferry Park, Cape May NJ featuring 15 new works; fall engagement showing 15 new works at "7 Mile Design" studio in Stone Harbor, NJ; and participation in the Artists Guild of the Cape studio tour for several seasons. Pop up show in Avalon N.J. A busy and productive 2023.
10 of my original works are featured at Beacon Art Shortwave Gallery in Stone Harbor, NJ; a recurring engagement at a fabulous contemporary gallery. I have also participated in several pop-up shows in Avalon, NJ.
I am among the founders of Seagrove Art Cooperative, a new artistic initiative, curating and presenting two stellar exhibitions in 2025, raising considerable funds for the burgeoning Cape May Point Arts and Science Center.
I am an artist member at the venerable Salmagundi Club on lower Fifth Avenue in New York, where I show my work periodically throughout the year, with oil paintings sold at the annual auctions in 2024 and 2025.
To John at Jerry's for his quiet encouragement and guidance in selecting the tools of the trade; the late and sorely missed Lyn Boyer for taking a novice under her wing, cheerfully teaching impromptu master classes to him a decade ago; Kelly Sullivan for her unbridled enthusiasm and structured spontaneity; Stan Sperlak and Joe Milligan for their generosity and mentorship, sharing the beauty of Crow Creek and local environs with Art Guild aspirants; Tom and Amy Onder for re-igniting the spark; my dad Joe for my inherited patience and draftsman's eye; my mom Lori for my unquenchable love of art; our dear girls for their love in keeping me ever young at heart, and Regina for her undying devotion to me in all things.
I've enjoyed the good fortune of having encountered sources of inspiration at key moments on the path forward. These days I find time in the "Sun Porch and Lair Studios" to turn out works drawn from the limitless seascapes and splendor of America's oldest seaside resort at the southern-most tip of "Jersey," ... Cape May. I am an associate member of Oil Painters of America, OPA, and a member of Laguna Plein Air Painters Association. I have enjoyed attending numerous events sponsored by Streamline Publishing, Inc., publishers of Plein Air and Fine Art Connoisseur Magazines. I regularly paint with a very talented group of 12 plein air painters on the Jersey Cape. The journey continues...
